Introduction to Basic Composition
1. Focal Point : A strong Focal Point is a crucial part of any successful composition because it helps your viewers' eyes naturally focus on the most significant parts of your design first.
Figure 1.1 for Focal Point
2. Scale & Hierarchy : directing the viewer's attention to and away from specific features. The human eye reads the left first, then the right, incorporating how the left and right brains work.
3. Balance and Elements : Consider each element's weight as a good way to master asymmetrical balance. Smaller things may appear to have less weight than larger objects, whereas richly textured materials may appear to have more weight than plain colored elements.
Figure 1.3 Balance and Elements
4. White space : White space, often known as "empty space," is used to balance off a composition's main focus. When used correctly, white space may assist improve the clarity and overall appearance of your design by balancing out the more difficult and busy portions of your composition with room that allows your design to breathe.
Rule of thirds
The process of splitting an image into thirds using two horizontal and two vertical lines is known as the rule of thirds. This fictitious grid is divided into nine sections, each having four intersection points.
Functions of the Rule of thirds:
- Use composition methods that are in harmony with what the eye naturally finds pleasant.
- Negative space can be used in a creative way.
- Make a connection between the subject and the background.

Golden Ratio
A mathematical ratio known as the golden ratio. It can be found in nature, and when applied in a design, it creates organic, natural-looking compositions that are attractive to the eye. The Golden Ratio is all about aesthetics in design, which is generating and appreciating a sense of beauty through harmony and symmetry, when used in design, creates a sense of artistry.
Setting your dimensions to 1:1.618 is an easy way to implement the Golden Ratio.
Week 1:
1. The Bezier Game
Practice and Play on this game :
Fig 1.8 Favorite Collage
This is my first picture that i like, because it show us a lot of many places and it is still looks match each other
Fig 1.9 Favorite Collage
I choose this picture, because its just look diffrent from other and it is pleasant to my eyes
Fig 1.10 Favorite Collage
I like this one, because its looks abstract but its unique and cool
Week 2:
This week we began our class with an introduction to basic composition, rules of third, golden ratio, and composition framing and cropping. After the lecture Mr Marti told us to do make collage from the physical material that we collect and we must make 3 pre-composition.
Week 3:
This week we still learn about collage but this week were using photoshop to make our collage and Mr Martin teach us the basic how to use photoshop like how to crop using a diffrent tool like pen, magic wand, polygonal lasson tool, and etc.
Week 4:
This week we learn about adjustment layers and filters to make a photo look better, Mr Martin teach us by demonstrating how to use filters for photo in photoshop.
For this assignment, we were assigned to create reflection by using several given photos from our lecturer. We need to use certain objects from the photoshop in order completing our assignment.
Instruction :
- Follow the WEEK 5 tutorial demo (Hearst Mansion)
- Follow the step-by-step video to edit in photoshop
- Download the images
- Attach the Digital imaging exercise - PART 1 (SHAZAM)
- Attach the Digital Imaging exercise - PART 2 (MY REFLECTION)
- Upload PART 1 & PART 2 to your e-portofolio blog
SHAZAM
For this exercises, we're being given 2 different pictures throughout google drive from Mr Martin. These photos will be the main object for this assignment, we need to manipulate and combine them together using Adobe Photoshop as instructed from our lecturer. We need to adjust several things to make these photo looks real. Here are the images :
Figure 4.1 The Given Photo (Shazam)
Figure 4.2 The Given Photo (Hearst Mansion)
By using the quick selection tool, I started cropping the Shazam photo within a few minutes. This tool really helped me cropping the photo in a very quick way. This tool could divide 2 different contrast object and does more powerful and detail than magic tool.
Figure 4.3 Quick Selection tool
Figure 4.4 Application of the quick tool
Secondly, I chose to combine the masked/PNG Shazam with the Hearst Mansion image following the given instruction from the video. We need to adjust several things such as its composition. We couldn't just reduce size of the image by stretching the image, we need to use CTRL + T to help us reduce the image size.
Figure 4.5 Makes/PNG Shazam
Figure 4.6 Combing and Reducing the image size
Afterwards, I tried to adjust the luminance and the color intensity by clicking the image > adjustment > and match color. We can play around with the tools to manipulate Shazam photo. I played around with the tool so that the image could be manipulated and the two images looks good together.
Figure 4.7 Adjusting the Match Color
Thereafter, by using brush tool, I started to create the shadow as well to make the photo looks even real and unity. You can adjust the size and the hardness of the brush as well as reduce the opacity to make it more believable.
Figure 4.8 Brush Tool
Figure 4.9 Shadow
I played around with the gaussian blur adjust or conform the radius of its shadow. This is intended to make the image look more convincing.
For the last step, I followed Mr Martin to give the image mirror effect to the image by duplicating the Shazam photo. You can also use paths and mask to cut the unused part for this picture, this will help you to create the photo even more believable.
Figure 4.11 Duplicate the layer
Figure 4.12 Try to eliminate the unused part
Figure 4.13 The using of Paths and Mask
And that's all what I learned from the given video. This exercise will be very important and valuable for all designer especially for the graphic designer to create the unreal picture to be more even believable. We also learned several thing about how various the tools in photoshop.

Week 10:
For this week Mr martis gave us a task to do animation in after effect with the collage that Mr Martin gave us from google drive.
1. Download the composition below:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1fePzGWCEqeg2A2rK7VysY0OE3iwtdZKF/view?usp=sharing
2. Import the W9_ANIMATE.psd into Adobe After Effects.
3. Create a composition setting 1080 px (Width) x 1920 px (Height), Duration 15 second
4. Create a keyframe animation to the layers using Position (P), Scale (S) & Masking path.
5. Render output: Quicktime (H.264)
6. Upload your exercise into your Youtube Channel.
